A specialized intervention unit for Substance Dependency Background
The recent spurt in substance abuse has emerged as an
unprecedented threat to the quality of human life. Apart from alcohol, the
abuse of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substance has proliferated across
regions and countries, leaving ugly scars in its wake. In India, research in
various regions and population group confirms the drug abuse and alcoholism
and use of tobacco products has infiltrated into all socio-cultural and
economic strata.
Consequences
In terms of the adverse consequences of substances abuse,
it is universally recognized that
- At the individual level: Substance abuse is associated with
loss of physical strength, mental health problems and other
physiological disorders.
- At the family level: Substance abuse tears the fabric of
family life, causes emotional stress and strains, financial burdens and
degradation of moral values, the women here become vulnerable.
- At the Community level: Substance abuse entails heavy social
and economic costs, such as dependence related accidents and deaths,
wastage of manpower, rise in crime and increased expenditure in
prevention.
The need
Catapulted from being just another satellite town into
the electronic city of the National Capital Region, Noida has rightly earned
the sobriquet, thanks to a steadily mushrooming range of business
enterprises which prefer to set up their ventures in this city.
Unfortunately, the monetary abundance all around has also brought in its
wake all the vices associated with affluence. Even there is overwhelming
evidence to prove that substance dependency among Noidaites is on the rise,
and alarmingly so. Yes, even school and college students of the city have
fallen easy victims, which has given rise to consequent problems and hazards
namely stress, depression, anxiety, and life suddenly seems powerless and
unmanageable, and consequently turning life into a meaningless existence and
sufferings.

finds its own solace when shared with someone who will listen in confidence.
